Is this setup possible?

Here’s the setup I’m thinking of:
Main CPU is a gaming rig, big CPU/GPU/etc, hooked up to a projector/HDTV/etc, Display 1, on a wall. The laptop is setup to act as a second display for the main CPU, as well as a keyboard and mouse.
Display 2 has to be fast enough to play games/watch video and it should operate as in a normal multi-montior setup with Display 1. This needs to work with Windows XP or Vista (or Windows 7?).
For the user, they should just be able to walk in with their laptop, connect it up and take control of the main system.
Is this setup possible? Is there some kind of technology out there (software or hardware) that would allow the connection between the laptop and the main system?
