Woot! I got a new car!

by Chris on Dec.03, 2007, under 07 Elantra, Car

So I bought a new car!

My New Car

It’s an 07 Hyundai Elantra with 22K miles on it. It’s got all the bells and whistles (electric windows, 6 speaker CD player, remote lock, alarm, etc etc). It’s got a 143hp 2.0L DOHC engine in it. 0-60 in around 10 seconds, which is probably the best I’ve had in a car yet.

It’s a lovely drive. It’s smooth, quiet and really good on fuel. I’ve driven about 50 miles in it and used up less than 2 gallons. The inside is very spacious, which I need (being 6 foot and a bit tall).

Over the weekend I installed my Sirius radio as well as set up somewhere to mount my mp3 Player/GPS unit. I want to put a decent computer in it, but that will probably have to wait until the Summer, when I have time and I can work outside (it snowed again over the weekend :( )

All the insides glow a lovely cobalt blue, so I’m going to put in black/blue seat covers/mats/etc. I’m also going to get the glass tinted once I save up the money.

IE Cacheing AJAX requests

by Chris on Nov.29, 2007, under Computers

So for the past couple of days I’m been programming like crazy to create a set of member pages for the CYC’s web site. Everything was looking good in Firefox so I decided to check the page in IE7.

This is when I quickly realised that IE caches AJAX requests (which seems to defeat the purpose of AJAX in my opinion). So off to google I go to see what I can find about fixing this.

I found one site that suggested adding php headers to the page (http://www.greenash.net.au/posts/thoughts/an-ie-ajax-gotcha-page-caching) but I knew that wouldn’t work, since you can’t send headers to page that already exists.

So back to the web I went. I found another blog (http://www.howtoadvice.com/StopCaching) that suggested adding a unique var to the URL. So I added in this little line of code in my AJAX PHP functions:

      $URL .= “&ms=” . date(“U”);

And after that it worked perfectly.

At some point I should give more information on the AJAX framework I use. It’s basically a single javascript file, a PHP file full of functions and then the actually PHP pages to run the requests. I could probably compile it all into one file, but I find it easier to manage as multiple files.

1408

by Chris on Jun.28, 2007, under Random Stuff

So I watched 1408 last night. Now I’m going to start by saying that I’m not a Stephen King fan. That aside, 1408 was a really good movie. It was very different from your normal horror.

It felt more like something Lovecraft would write, which I think is probably the reason I liked it. It wasn’t this long drawn out story about a bunch of people being killed, it was a delve into the supernatural and it’s effects on the mind. This is how I would imagine an Evil Room being.

So, if you like horror/scary movies, I recommend it. If you like supernatural storys (ones without the blood and guts) then I recommend it for you as well.

As for myself, while I watched the movie, part of me was saying, “Damn, I hope that never happens to me!” while another part was saying, “I wish I could experience the supernatural at that level!”. I would definatly be a life changing experience if that ever really happened to you.

Kyoshiro to towa no sora

by Chris on May.22, 2007, under Anime

Ok, first impressions first I guess. This show is very confusing at first. Little is told about the background story, and I’m not going to tell much about it here either. By the end of the show I understood what the anime makers were going for, but I think they missed the mark a little.

The story is about a girl, Shiratori Kuu. She is normal school girl who has a dream about her “prince charming”. When she finally meets a guy that seems to be her prince though, everything goes to hell. Giant robots, fighting angels and a massive case of sibling rivalry.

This show, even though it has plenty of fighting, seems to really be a romance story. A romance story that spends a lot of time focuses on girls/women kissing. Although it’s not kissing in a nice yuri sense, if you were hoping for that.

So, overall, this show wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t that great in my opinion. You’re left in the dark until about episode 5 and even by the end there were questions I wanted answering. Maybe I’ll read the manga and see if that answers any of them. If you want a show with a bit of everything then this is a step in the right direction, although I’ve seen better.

Rating: Decent…
